Dental Hygiene and Therapy

This role focuses on preventative care and a range of clinical procedures, working independently or alongside dentists.

Area

Detail

Qualification

You must hold a GDC approved Degree or Diploma to become a Dental Hygienist and Therapist.

Academic Entry

You need at least 5 GCSE's grades A-C, including Mathematics, English, and Sciences; and 2 A-levels, ideally in Biology.

Alternative Entry

Alternatively, you can have a recognised dental nursing qualification with adequate experience. However, the 5 GCSE's are still applicable alongside 1 A-level in a relevant science subject (preferably Biology).

Course Duration

The degree is full-time and takes 3-4 years. The diploma is full-time and takes 27 months.

Prep/Experience

At least 2 weeks work experience in a general dental practice or hospital is ideally required, either with a dentist or a dental hygienist/therapist, gaining an insight into the profession. Reading articles/journals and attending insight days are also great ways to get a glimpse into dentistry.

Required Behaviours

Dentistry is all about public healthcare. Giving examples of where you have shown compassion, worked together as a team, are committed to quality care, and being respectful, are all behaviours that Universities seek.

Role Summary

We work independently as well as alongside dentists. A dental hygienist's main role is providing preventative care and oral hygiene instruction to treat gum disease, thereby keeping the teeth and gums healthy. A dental therapist's role includes that of a hygienist, but we can also carry out other procedures such as: application of fluoride and fissure sealants, taking dental x-rays, taking impressions, undertaking fillings on both adults and children, and the extraction of deciduous teeth. With further training, dental therapists can also now carry out routine dental examinations on adults and children.

Hours of Work

Dental Hygienists and Therapists are usually self-employed, and so the days and hours of work can generally be very flexible, dependent on your practice and what sector you work in (e.g., NHS/Private). However, due to high demand, usual working hours are around 7 hours a day. It is also very typical to work at multiple practices, as a full-time hygienist is not always needed at one single practice. Some practices also offer an employed role.

Average Salary

The average salary can be expected to be between £35,000-£50,000, however, this can vary and go upwards depending on experience, location, sector, etc.

Progression

Can go on to do further postgraduate degrees in courses such as: Periodontology, Dental Implantology, and also train to become an Orthodontic Therapist or dentist, subject to requirements met.
